The world has gone crazy.

So, I just had the worst day of my life.

At around 1:30 PM today, at Valley Golf and Country Club, Antipolo City, Mayor Nasser Pangandaman, Jr., Mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur, his father, Secretary Nasser Pangandaman of the Department of Agrarian Reform, and company, beat my defenseless 56-year-old dad and my 14-year-old brother to a pulp because of some stupid misunderstanding on the golf course.

This is a golf course. I have been a golfer all my life, and I have never seen anything like this. NOTHING. This is hard to comprehend. And it happened to my own father and my own brother too. Right in front of my eyes.

My brother and I were playing golf at the South Course of Valley. We were on the 3rd hole, and we see two golf carts going past us, overtaking our flight, and setting up to tee off on the next hole. My dad goes up to them and asks them why they would do that, why they would overtake us without even asking for our permission. Golf etiquette 101. One of the guys says that they're with the flight in front of us. (So what? That doesn't give them the right to just pass us WITHOUT asking.) So, we go to the 5th hole. The flight behind us catches up with us, and asks us what caused the hold up. We said that this flight just slipped in front of our flight. So we complained to the marshall. We play the 5th hole and walk towards the next hole, where there is a teehouse, and both the flights in front of us were there, talking with the marshall. The mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur talks with my dad. Things get heated up. Voices were raised. But never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever imagine that someone would pull out a punch. Apparently not. He attacks my father. His flightmates, maybe 2 or 3 of them, rush to his aid and beat up my father. My 56-year-old father. My younger brother and I could not just watch. We rushed to break the fight. My younger brother pleads to the mayor to please stop it. To not hurt my dad. To just stop. His words still ring through my head..."Sorry na po, sorry na po...tama na...tama na po..." With his hands in front of his chest in a praying position. PLEADING. The mayor socks him in the face. My brother defended himself. My dad is still on the ground getting clobbered. My brother is the same way. I try to stop the fight, but all I can do is stop one person. There were 4 or 5 of them attacking now.

Someone breaks up the fight. I thought it was all over. The mayor shouts to his caddy: "Hindi nila kami kilala! Sabihin mo nga sa kanila kung sino ako!" And believe me, I had no idea who this person was. But now I know. He's the person who, with 4 other men, beat up my 56-year-old father and my 14-year-old brother. He's the person who sacks a pleading 14-year-old kid in the face. He's a person who, I am sure, is gonna rot in hell.

I lash out, but my dad held me back. I was screaming my lungs out, shouting to this mayor, telling him about what he had done. I said: "Nakakahiya kayo. Singkwenta'y sais anyos ang tatay ko. And kapatid ko kakatorse anyos. Anong ilalaban nila sayo?"

The mayor looks at my brother, point to his face, and says, "Tatandaan kita!" And he tells me that my brother has a bad attitude and that I need to watch him. WHAT THE HELL?! So, my brother's bad for defending his father?!

We leave. We walk to the clubhouse to file a complaint. My brother asks for a doctor. My dad could barely walk. Their group comes to the clubhouse, sees my brother. Once again my brother pleads, says sorry, and is crying. He was CRYING, for crissakes. But no. The relentless mayor still punches him in the face, and then sees my dad and goes after my dad again. Him and his friend pull my dad to the ground, pulls at his feet, and steps on him like he's dirt. I run to him and try to hold him back, holding him back by his shirt, while this other guy and this girl tries to stop me. She tells me to just stop it. I scream in her face "they're beating my father up and you want me to stop?!" I pull at his shirt--I don't let go. All I can see was my dad being trampled on. I didn't even see my brother getting beat up.

People pull them away. I get my dad, and I saw my brother. His right ear was bleeding. I freaked out. I told the receptionists to bring my brother to the clinic. I pull my dad away. People were separating us.

My mom and my older brother come. I tell her Bino's right ear is bleeding. They both look like they could kill. My dad holds my brother off, I hold off my mom. When I finally got my mom under control, my older brother gets away and I hold him off. Two of the mayor's bodyguards pull out guns. I embraced my brother from the back, just holding him back, crying. The receptionists came to us, crying, hugging me, my dad, and my mom, whispering to us to just leave. "Maam, umalis na po kayo, may mga baril sila...Maam...umalis na po kayo please..."

I am pretty sure the Secretary of DAR did not take part in the fight, but he just watched all this happen. He watched two of his sons, as we figured out, the other guy was his son, too, beat up my father and my 14-year-old brother. He didn't do anything to stop it. And this person is what now? A cabinet member. A politician.

Sounds like something out of a movie, doesn't it? But this is what happened. TODAY. The day after Christmas. To my family. And all I ask for is JUSTICE. The people at Valley Golf did not seem to want to help us. None of the security guards even tried to stop the fight. Right in the clubhouse. I came back after the fight was over and talked to the receptionists. They say they did not see anything. The general manager of Valley Golf would not give us the names of the men who made my brother's ear bleed. It took him an hour. Maybe even more than that. He seemed to not want to help us. Because, we were against the SECRETARY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRARIAN REFORM and the MAYOR OF MASIU CITY, LANAO DEL SUR. They were all scared.

The world has gone crazy. Two politicians beat up a defenseless 56-year-old father and his 14-year-old son. At a golf course. I swear to God, I thought golfers were decent people. You would think politicians were decent people. I guess not. I guess they gang up on 56-year-old men and beat up pleading 14-year-old kids.

Please pray for my dad, my brother and for my whole family. Please pray that we get JUSTICE. Oh God, please, give these people what they deserve.

i have read your blog as one of my friends did post it in his FB... i am also happy to know that a lot of people is supporting your cause and the cause to stop the greedy, abusive and self serving politicians... what i would like to convey is that, i hope that we will continue to closely observe and watch how this case moves on... again, i say, that the reason why our country is so full of these kinds of politicians, is actually our own doing... Filipinos are so apathetic, that they can do away with their ill doings, "pag hindi sa atin nangyari, we can just comment and say a lot... " but what do we really do about it?... sana makita natin sa aksyon ang ating suporta at huwag mawawala ang ningas... hindi sapat lang na tayo'y maawa... dapat nating makita sa gawa... Marie, please post the updates of the case... tama na ang mga mapang abusong tulad nila... let's make Philippines a better place to live in naman...

I am sorry to hear this. I hope your father and brother are okay. I also hope justice will be served to your family.

People in power gets away with everything. It needs to stop. But the sad truth is, the people who are capable to do stop these are also one of them.

Media is more powerful than a gun.
Use Internet, radio, TV, and newspaper to inform the world. Ask help from ABS-CBN and GMA networks. People loves underdog and helpless beings.
Ask help from the civil society groups, and also from the militant groups.
Try ask help from muslim groups also.
Try to talk directly to President GMA for help. Do not bypass our president. She is more powerful than the DAR secretary. She will. She is also a mother.
Try to talk to the PNP chief and DOJ chief for assistance.
Ask for help from the NBI. There are independent from the local government.
Don't stop seeking justice. Make noise. Spread the words.

The law of karma will eventually catch up with people of these kind. even us here overseas were shocked to hear this kind of news. it is really very hard to entrust people like these with powers. they live in a world they own. give them a slice of cake and they end up wanting to eat it all. I wonder thou how these people learned how to play golf???? they should be in the mountains of Basilan planting camotes.
Continue to be brave. Our Prayers goes with you and your family, OUR GOD will look after you. Hindi niya kayo pababayaan at ganoon din kami.
A Blessed New Year!

Halanag kaluluwa!

I do symphatize with you and your family but sorry to be a spoil sport. Reality check- the Pangandamans are GMA's boys. GMA is very much in power. So I doubt you will get any credible justice.

I can hear the Secretary of Justice saying it's your fault to get beaten up since you were in the golf course. ( I heard him say that in another case).

In the end, you and your family will just spend and waste money on expensive lawyers on a losing case. I heard they already plan to file a counter charge? Bet it's physical injury on their knuckles, they had sustained from hitting your dad and younger brother.

You have a better chance with the Sparrow Unit.

Please tell your family to be very careful (I am sure a lot of people tell you this).

I will pray for you and your family and hopefully, justice will prevail but I am sure, that, there will be twists and turns and it may be a long ride to justice.

Keep the faith....keep on fighting for your rights!

Bambee,

So sorry to hear about this injustice to your family. I pray that this life returns just retribution to those offenders. what i am thankful for is that there was no loss of life, and that your family was the better by not retaliating to the point of a loss. karma has a way of finding its debtors, so i know this sometimes evil world will not let those guilty go unscathed.

in 2009, I wish for a prosperous year for your family and am confident in knowing that you have already won by being the better of their evil. afterall, you all can look past this event and be thankful you all still have one another.

Cheers!

The DAR asshole has already apologized, but pursue the case against him and his dastardly son. Both of them deserve to rot in jail. They said they never started the fight. If they didn't, what gives them the right to hurt a 14-year-old boy? They will burn in hell, many times over.

Drawing your firearm against a 14 year old with a baseball bat? If you are bodyguards of this ASSH*LE mayor then you must be at least 5'7" in height and no less than a 200lbs body frame! Shame on you!!!

To Pangandaman JR: Be thankful that the peace and order loving mayor of antipolo city did not hear of your shameful and cowardly act within our city limits! Nakakahiya ka! Dahil sa iyo nakakahiya ka bilang taga Masiu, Lanao Del Sur!!! I've known people from your place and much to my surprise you are quite the opposite from what I experienced when I was there!

To Pangandaman SR: Words are not enough to describe my rage against you! Karma comes back very swift and fast!

Maybe we should ban all public servants from the golf course. After all, golf IS a gentleman's game. And what happened was not just boorish behaviour, but attempted murder. You pull out a gun ONLY with the intent to use it, and to do that on a hapless family trying to defend themselves from YOUR wounded pride and YOUR initial wrongdoing, you cannot claim self defense. Only a coward would take a gun to a fistfight. I'm sure the situation would have ended up differently had the victims' family name been Arroyo, or even Cojuangco. Maybe they have not YET experienced being on the receiving end of such treatment. Well, one can't stay in power forever. And when their turn is through, that's when the crocodile hunters will come calling.

Think about it, if the perpetrator can do this to somebody with stature in life AND outside his area of influence (some backwater feudal mudpatch in the jungles of Mindanao I bet), can you imagine what atrocities his constituents are enduring from this common thug cloaked in the honorable guise of a public servant? One thing for sure, if he pulled a stunt like this around my old neighborhood in Tondo, the cops won't fish enough pieces of him and his cohorts from the river to piece together.

Meanwhile we'll just have to endure life in this pisspot of a country we call home. Happy New Year po.

Quezon would be so proud. He got his wish.

Golf is a gentleman’s game, there are rules and certain etiquettes to follow when you play it. This is the same rule and etiquette that we inculcate on our junior golfers. House rules must be strictly implemented and applied equally to all players. GUNS and BODYGUARDS should never be allowed inside the golf course.
Golfers regardless of their status in life should stick to the rules of golf when they play.
That incident happened because some people disobeyed the rules and played like they own the golf course.
Not everyone has the opportunity to play golf. Some people have to spend their HARD EARNED MONEY just to be able to let their kids enjoy this game.
LET US PRAY FOR BINO AND HIS FATHER that they will be able to overcome the trauma brought about by this incident.

For arguments sake, let's say this is true. Does cursing instigate a mauling?

Where did you get this story? How do you know it's true? It's hard to believe that a mayor would beat someone up and risk ruining his career and reputation.

But if it is true, here is a site that can help. It exposes the corruption of Philippines officials and helps the victims. You can send them your story and any relevant pictures to the email on the site. The politicians are scared of it, and it's the only powerful weapon that the grass roots people have against their tyranny.

Here's advice from a lawyer who received the forwarded post from me:

Physical injuries? That's a minor offense. I think the offense is being mischaracterized. Remember that the perps drew guns while unlawfully restraining the victims and beating them up in the process. There is unlawful restraint because with the guns pointed at them, the victims cannot leave or run away. The guns plus five men surrounding them completely intimidated them into remaining where they are and accept the beating. This is kidnapping. In kidnapping, you don't have to actually physically bring the victim to another place and ask for ransom. It is enough to either physically restrain the individual or restrain him with intimidation. This is what prosecutors here in the U.S. charge in cases like this. The use of a gun or guns during the commission of the crime should earn the perps more time in the can. Here in the U.S., that's automatic five years. And that's separate from the kidnapping charge. I'm sure there is such a law in the Philippines too. Plus, I'm sure the bodyguards don't have the legal permit to carry guns in public places like a golf course. This should earn them another 15 years for illegal possession of a firearm. Even if they have a permit to carry, you cannot flash or brandish a gun in order to intimidate or cause serious bodily harm to a citizen. Kidnapping with the use of a firearm should entitle the perps to a term of life imprisonment. There should be 2 life terms because the kidnapping occurred twice, once in the golf course, and the second in the club house. Of course, the question is, is the Fiscal of Antipolo courageous enough to pursue this course of action? Filing a charge for serious physical injuries is just too cowardly and another injustice to the victims. Also, I noticed from the statement of the victims' family member who withnessed the event, that the perps committed the crime with the color of authority, one of them being a current mayor of an inconsequential town somewhere in the wilds of Mindanao. And they gained encouragement from the presence of their father, too, a cabinet member. Shouldn't the people raise a stink over this? Shouldn't ordinary citizens send letters of complaints to their congressmen and senators, including Arroyo, to stamp out this grave abuse of a person's government authority and position? Remember, this could happen to YOU!!

These politicians are really sick to their guts!!!!To the Dela Paz Family, we will keep on praying to help you to withstand these evils of our society!!!

Such ill politicians are not gods. Each have their own time. They too, will fall on the ground. When? Only good knows.

For you to seek justice for yourself and your family, you need a lot of strength and power. Even if people like myself support you, you have to take care of yourself and your family and be on guard. The people you're fighting with are dirty power-trippers. The more they crush you and your family, the more satisfied and powerful they feel.

Pleading wouldn't work for such bastards. You need an organized approach and gather your resources if you are really up to seeking justice.

Before you do organize anything ask yourself what kind of justice you are looking for. Are you looking for an apology from such power-tripping bastards (most probably)? Or are you seeking compensation (most probably not)? If you get the kind of justice you want, would you be happy? Or is the safety and peacefulness of your family more important than those bastards?

You can prioritize the safety and peacefulness of your family life now and just walk away and ignore such behavior. Let natural justice takes it course. Believe you me, nobody escapes natural justice--it just takes a bit of time. Those bastards would do the same to anyone else--it was just chance that it was your dad and your brother.

It's not your priority to stop those bastards from misbehaving. It's your priority to protect your family. If you don't feel 500% sure that you're strong enough to fight such dirty men NOW, if you really work on it, maybe later, you would be.

My prayers are with you. I hate bastards who step on the meek and helpless. But I'd hate to see you going thru the ordeal of fighting such dirty men, if you yourself have no clue how those dirty men think to defend themselves and feed their sick egos.

all that we can do now given the kind of justice (injustice) system that we have now is PRAY and psychologically flush them out from this world.

This is a very disturbing and an unfortunate incident but not surprising... Politicians in the Philippines think they own the land and THEY have the right to do anything. There are a lot more victims around that have not spoken of their encounters... its great that you've shared this to everyone. I just hope that justice will prevail but knowing how our justice system work, this might just die down... I do hope I'm proven wrong.

I do hope that people responsible will be held liable. You are not alone. We are with you. This has become a fight against us ordinary people VS abusive politicians who think they own the Philippines. They should be taught a lesson that they are not above the law and THEY are here to serve US!

i wish there was something we could do about this. prayers are fine but we should seriously do something about it. like email the bastard. he should know that using his position like that is wrong and something to be ashamed off. i don't want that bastard to think that he can get away with this.

does anyone have his email address? let's post it and send him mail.

i'm sorry you had to go through that though. but think about it, this guy being the way he is ruins him and his family. he's got no class at all. he probably never played golf before getting into the government, stealing the money and finally managing to buy a membership in a country club. obviously he's new to this. he has no idea how to act properly in a country club.

oh and i just saw the picture of him someone sent a link to. he looks like a douche bag. that's his karma. poor bastard.

You'd think these people in power and their brainless bodyguards would content themselves with invading public coffers and abusing the system. No, after that they want their own "right of way" in traffic--pushing people around with their blinkers and sirens as if the average Filipino has no right to a quiet, peaceful commute home. Now, even our golf courses aren't safe. Do we now have to beware of golf courses where politicians frequent? Has golf now become a dangerous sport just because it's the game of people in power? What next?

To the Dela Paz,

Never accept words of apologies from this arrogant politician family...they are good at it...and politicians are never sincere...Im sure your family also have friends in politics...and Im sorry to tell you that they are all the same...

words..and nothing more that you will get from them...

the nassers..the sons of bitches obviously thought they have all the powers to beat and scare anyone..I know your family is also considered above middle class...if these sons of bitches can do these things to your family..how much more to regular filipinos like us...

Please make the filipino proud..majority of the filipino people no longer believes in the words a politician says...

If you win these battle against the corrupt and the gangster family of nasser...you will make us all proud..and you will make us feel that somehow we have received justice against one family of corrupt ang a gangster-like family of politicians...

more power to you and to your family...

It really pissed me of hearing an abusive Filipino civil servant and politicians, they are such an embarrassment to this republic. I hope the Philippine Government and the Judiciary will start this new year right by convicting this abusive people, put them behind bars and don't allow them to run for public office ever.

They are in that position to serve the Filipino people so they should be setting a good example. The World has Gone Crazy indeed if the government and the Filipino people will let the Pangandaman and Associates getaway of their barbaric behavior.

This incident also serve as a warning to golfers out there, Valley Golf and Country Club is unsafe to play. They cannot guarantee your safety.

that's so bad. its sad it happened to you and your family. you know, a lot of politicians do this things but not a single word came out from the press or media reporting such events. why? they are afraid of what this friggin' politicians could do and even though it is hard to admit, they have the power to put you in jail even if you are innocent. i guess all we can do now is to pray for them, for them to realize how big their heads are now. i mean, we can't really do anything about it. just think of it this way, maybe someday they would realize that what they did with their life is not right. i believe in karma and everything you do, whether good or bad, will come back to you. just wait , believe, pray and wait, they will have their turn. and when that comes, pray that they would change for the better. i'll pray for you and your father and your brother and...well for your family. i hope the scar, or maybe its still a wound, that this event left you heal in time and with the love and supprot of the people who still believe that justice is just around the corner. there is a reason for everything. Have your father and brother filed the appropriate complaint-affidavit with the prosecutor's office? The complaint with the Valley Golf management is not a pre-requisite for filing with the prosecutor's office. Better if you take a two-pronged approach. A case for attempted murder can be brought there.

Also, file a case with the Ombudsman... A simple affidavit will do to suspend them from office. Give them what they deserve!

Your father or brother, should let it go instead at the beginning of situation. Now you learn the lesson that is always happen and still happening to ordinary poor Filipino against family of rich kababayan kuno.

Bambee, we join your family in praying that justice be served. We truly admire your courage and pray for your family's safety and peace of mind.

Unknown said...

I am deeply troubled by your family's unfortunate encounter and I would like to wish you well in such a time. While prayers are well and good, for your family's sake, as well as for the good of the Filipino people, TRUE JUSTICE MUST BE SWIFTLY SERVED.

I must fully agree that that Cabinet member must be sacked by the President, and the Ombudsman to file the proper charges to all the politicians involved to show the people that this is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY for Public Servants to behave, even more so if they have been appointed by the Executive Branch. But knowing how our politicians deal with things, they will just stall this until it dissipates. Either that or the affected politician just plays sick and hookie to any sort of investigation.

So everyone, keep up the pressure!

People want to be remembered in this world for something they have done - the gallant, the right, and the good. I know of good people who want to end up in the history books, and I'm sure readers of this blog know of some people with this mindset as well. The undeserving typical Philippine politician garbage do not see this as they are blinded by fame, fortune, and power. Unfortunately for these politicos that have harmed your family, they're not going to be remembered for anything considered the gallant, the right, and the good things THAT THEY COULD HAVE, AND MUST HAVE DONE BUT HAVE INSTEAD, DELIBERATELY AND WILLINGLY WITH FULL INTENT AND KNOWLEDGE, CHOSEN TO FAIL IN DOING SO.

As for the death threats your family is receiving - to the one sending the text messages: Are you fully aware of what you're doing and are willing to kill for a few pesos? Is this the right thing to do? How much did the mayor's family say they were going to pay you to send the messages and fulfill these vengeful acts? These are serious questions to ask yourself and you better think this over and over and over unless you do not have a conscience and there's really no point of reasoning with you.

I have been playing golf for over 10 years now. Golf is such a gentlemen game. I don't know why such low life people are allowed to play game. The game we all have learned to love.

The problem with our politicians is they think the own the world. They need to realized that they are in the position they hold because ordinary people like us who pays our taxes pay for their existence. I believe the so called honorable mayor and secretary thinks they are in the jungle where they came from. They should realized that the golf course is a civilized place and wild men like them should not be in unless the learn to act a civilized adult men. I hope they leave the arrogance in there home land which never prosper because they have leader like them.

I think the honorable thing to do is for them to quit there post and go back to Mindanao fight the insurgents. I think they belong there and I hope they stay there.

Me and my kids will include you and your family in our prayers. I hope you receive the justice you deserve for what this wild politician from Mindanao did to you. You will always have my support if need be.

Henceforth, i appeal to the DILG Secretary who is known for his wit & adherance to good governance to immiately suspend Mayor Pangandaman and ensure that he is sacked from office.Nasser Jr. is absolutely NOT at all qualified to be a public servant.

And to the President whom we all look up to as intelligent and well-educated, to immediately remove the DAR Secretary from his post. Nassr Sr. is a disgrace to the cabinet and has no moral credibility to hold such sensitive post.

Rock Ed Radio presents a venue for many to be heard. There are always two or more sides to a story and most often we will not hear them all. This gig is not designed to resolve anything because, unfortunately, we accept that resolving this mess is not our call.

This is neither a venue to diss, berate, scare, intimidate, cheer or boo anyone for the sake of noise.

This gig is designed for everyone to talk to each other and hear opinions out. It is also a Sociological discussion on our behaviour as people with or without power, with or without fear, with or without arms, with or without a golf membership. But let's talk anyway.

We will not exactly talk about them, we will talk about US.

The panel is still being invited, but the participants (you) are definitely in. All in. Everyone invited, everyone welcome.

Rock Ed Radio will moderate the discussion, setting the ground rules for decency, politeness, and peeing before debating. Let's calmly, urgently, rabidly, intelligently, passionately discuss this situation of love and hate, war and peace. Whether you think this is an isolated case or a symptom of a bigger societal ill, come anyway and state your peaceful piece on the microphone this Friday.

We are open to re-posting of this announcement. Invitations of speakers given limited times and proper order of timing. Kindly email radio@rockedphilippines.org in advance if you want to make sure you have some time to be heard.

Come on Friday, limited seating, infinite standing.
A karaoke machine will be on standby in case we're done early. Singing of "My Way" is not allowed. If the invited bands come to play, we will make them play.

Violence, peace, power, apathy, golf etiquette, retaliation, cursing, bodyguards, crying, indignation, class-acts, decisions, blogging, reactions, sanctions, suggestions, the Philippine courts, Mindanao, golf club security measures and everything else.

Let's talk about ourselves, shall we?

Speech: Free
Admission: Free

Panelists: Adel Tamano, Danton Remoto, Bobby Garcia etc. Discussion moderated by Gang Badoy and Lourd de Veyra.

We have to face the fact that a number of government officials not only tend to display unparalled arrogance but even violence at the slightest provocation. This has grown worst in the past years due to the inherent weakness of justice system and bata bata system prevalent in our country. Public opinion seems to have little effect on government action on such issue sobrang kapal na ng mukha ng mga opisyal ngayon. If a former official in the Dept of Agriculture can outrightly lie in front of national television yon pa kayang hindi na televise? Sa japan nangyari yan nagharakiri na yon opisyal, dito iba lalagyan ng spin sa press gagamit ng connection at tatabunan ang isyu.

Ms. De La Paz,

It seems you have left out so many facts in your blog. Why no mention of the fact that your father poked and hit the Mayor with an umbrella which started the whole incident? These among other facts like you jumping on the son of the Sec. and scratched his face? That your brother hit the Mayor with a driver? That your father was the one who taunted the Mayor to begin with?

Such omission of facts changes the whole color of the story. It saddens me that your brother is an Atenean.... and puts the rest of us TRUTH BEARING BLUE EAGLES in a bad light.

May you be blessed this new year with the wisdom and courage to tell the truth.
